What is Colorectal Cancer?
Colorectal cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow in the colon or rectum. The colon and rectum are parts of the large intestine, which is responsible for absorbing water and nutrients from the food we eat.
Risk Factors:
- Age: 50 and older
- Family history
- Personal history of polyps or inflammatory bowel disease
- Obesity
- Physical inactivity
- Smoking
- High-fat diet
Symptoms:
- Blood in the stool
- Changes in bowel movements
- Abdominal pain or cramping
- Weakness or fatigue
- Unexplained weight loss
Screening and Prevention:
- Get screened regularly starting at age 50 (or earlier if you have a family history)
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Exercise regularly
- Eat a balanced diet low in fat and high in fiber
- Don't smoke
