Heart Health - What You Need To Know

Globally, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women, with an estimated 18 million people dying from cardiovascular diseases yearly, representing 32% of all deaths worldwide; and of these deaths, 85% are due to heart attacks and strokes.

The heart steadily pumps an average of 2,000 gallons of blood through the body each day, making it an organ that is indeed crucial to survival; being part of the body’s circulatory system, its main function is to keep blood that’s full of oxygen circulating throughout the body. This makes the human heart one of the hardest-working organs in the body.

Considering the importance of the heart, it is never too late to start changing our lifestyle towards having and maintaining a healthier heart. This can be done, starting by cultivating the habit of eating a heart-healthy diet. Ensure to eat a diet that includes fruits and vegetables; and healthier options such as whole grains, poultry, fish, and nuts, bearing in mind that healthy eating is possible for all.

Engaging in regular physical exercise (30 minutes every day of rhythmic and consistent physical activity) and preventing a sedentary lifestyle reduces the risk of serious health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma or other breathing problems as well as some types of cancer. Managing stress levels, getting adequate and regular sleep, also play a significant role in maintaining heart health.

Maintaining a healthy heart requires intentional efforts to minimize the consumption of stimulants like coffee and alcohol, while also monitoring blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and weight. Quitting smoking or avoiding the use of tobacco products can greatly impact the health of the heart, leading to a better and more fulfilling life.

The heart is indeed a critical organ that plays a central role in the functioning of the entire body. What you eat and how you live, can have a monumental impact on your heart health. By taking steps to care for our hearts, we can improve our overall health and well-being.
